Washington Roundtable releases Summer 2018 “Benchmarks for a Better Washington” Update

The Summer 2018 Benchmarks for a Better Washington has just been released by the Washington Roundtable. The video below quickly summarizes the state’s performance. Remember,

Since 2011, the Washington Roundtable has published the report,

a discrete set of metrics that speak to the heart of what constitutes a world class state – innovation, quality education, efficient transportation, and a healthy business climate.

The Roundtable set a high standard:

Our goal is to make Washington a top 10 state for quality of life and innovation while ensuring it is not one of the most expensive states in which to do business.

In addition to the video, the Roundtable published an easy-to-read rankings graphic and fact sheets taking a more in-depth look at the key areas of performance: education, transportation, business costs and growth & innovation.

Here’s quick summary. You’ll want to go to the data to understand the rankings and their importance.

  • Washington places in the top 10 on two measures of growth & innovation, one measure of education, one transportation metric, and one business cost metric.
  • The state ranks among the bottom 10 on one measure of education, one transportation measure, and three business cost measures.

It’s a valuable, data-driven way to assess how Washington is doing on things that matter. We incorporated the Benchmarks in our initial foundation report and the Opportunity Washington Scorecard.
